Mike Quinsey began wrestling at high school in the City of Mississauga in the 1970’s. Only a few coaches back then had a background in wrestling which forced Mike to have an open mind to carefully analyse and define what worked and what didn’t. His efforts to physicalize what he discovered afforded him some success as he went on to win the
Ontario High School Championships, (OFSAA) and was the first athlete ever to do so at any weight from Mississauga. He went on to a top-10 finish in the World Junior (under-21) championships. In the 1980 Canadian Olympic trials he was 1 st Alternate to 2-time world silver medallist Clark Davis. He enjoyed an outstanding competitive university career, twice winning the Simon Fraser University Scholar-Athlete Award before injuries ended his ability to compete at the highest levels.
In 1992, he turned to coaching the sport he loved so well. He continued to learn coaching methods from as many international coaches as he could and began to form a more coherent approach to wrestling. During this time, he coached regionally for a number of clubs in Ontario and worked his way up to a Level 3 NCCP wrestling coach.
He also expanded his knowledge of martial arts competing in Taekwondo while earning a 3rd Dan Black Belt, and trained in grappling under Peter Lee and winning the Canadian Open Grappling Championships (Advanced No-gi Division). In 2002 he found himself in the role of the head wrestling coach for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues where he
served for many years. Mike’s coaching methodology continues to evolve and develop as he coaches athletes of all ages from many disciplines. He is delighted to be a recent addition to the coaching team at Tanuki Martial Arts.
